My Nikon Action 8 x 40CF binoculars, 6 years old, are not giving me such sharp images. I have never before used the diopter ring (at base or right eyepiece) to try and focus because the central focus ring seemed to do the job and the diopter ring has never seemed to do anything, even when the bins were new. It rrotates a short distance between -, 0 and + but when I turn it there's no visible difference between these settings. Is it not functioning? Am I using it correctly (it seems I am from consulting the rather inadequate Nikon manual).

My Nikon Action 16 X 50--4.1 --serial number 715480BJ

A 16x50 will be less bright than a lower power binocular. It will also show up any distortion due to atmospherics more. The best solution is to increase the size of the front objective, to do this take them back and exchange them for say a 15x70 or similar. Note: you will not be able to hand hold these successfully! Tripod mounting is recommended for any magnification greater than 12X

Binoculars Stiff to focus

If they continue to get stiff then eventually the 3 set screws that hold the focus wheel loosen, and you will have no focus capability, its rare with zeiss but sounds like they should be regreased. the problem is to regrease you have to take completely apart as it is internal focus.if i can help any further contact [email protected] [email protected]

I dropped my Nikon Action Lookout III binoculars, ...

The same happened to my Mizar 10X25 I tried things like moving the front lenses but then I discovered that most probably the binoculars fell on one of the four corners, this caused the tubes' direction to be twisted. It could be that the left is pointing slightly down or the right is pointing slightly up, which is essentially the same, and which is what happened to mine. You can discover this miss-alignment by watching using both eyes and then close and open one of them the phantom image will appear and disappear. What you have to do is apply a force with your hands twisting the binoculars one tube up and the other down and hold where you can see clear, I just discovered this and it works, I think I should be able to re-align them again, but I haven't faund how to do so. If you find a different solution please let me know here: [email protected]

Stiff focus wheel

The number one rule is to never use oil on a binocular!! I suspect that the multistart thread on the focus arm carrier, which is internal, has become gunged up. This is not an easy repair for a beginner. The rubber has to be removed from the body of the binocular before you can even start to take them apart to determine the fault. Like any bearing or gear system, the part would have to be cleaned with a degreaser, then reassembled with new lubricant.

The adjustment knob was very hard to turn. Any way to lubricate?

I would be inclined to use a penatrative aerosol lubricant (like WD-40) in very sparse quantities. Squirt a little in using the WD40 smart straw applicator to direct the lube accurately and work the adjuster back and forth in a small section. Repeat this until you have freed up the adjustment from one end of its scope to the other. The focal adjustment is typically housed separately to the lenses and careful application of the lube should not affect them - avoid overusing the lube and have a mopup cloth under the spray zone to keep overspray/drips to an absolute minimum.

I dropped my Nikon Action Lookout III binoculars, and now I get a double image. The lenses seem to be fine, the focus gears seem to work, but they are not in sync.

The internal mirors were knocked out of alignment. They will have to be reclalibrated.
