The focuser on my Meade DS-70 telescope is broken, the problem is the rack part of the rack and pinion is missing several teeth in two sections. The rack appears to be part of the inner tube, so replacing the rack does not appear to be possible. One fix I was thinking of was a typical bar/pipe clamp except there are a 2nd and 3rd set of clamps in place where the pads would normally go. I could then clamp the 2nd & 3rd clamps to the inner & outer tube and then use the main clamp to adjust focus. However I can't seem to find anything like this online.

You can return this to Maede for repairs-- or they might sell you the parts.Call them here:http://www.meade.com/support/index.html

Rack and pinion leaking

This is on a CAR, right? Not a TELESCOPE, right? I think you are in Ireland? Right? All jokes aside, you can replace the rubber boots on the steering box (do both sides) by first disconnecting the tie rod ball joints and removing them. You will need a tool like this Sykes Pickavant (not expensive)http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/sy/sykes-pickavant-ball-joint-separator.jpgLoosen the lock nuts first. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buep0zSOg8ATake careful note of how many turns to unscrew the ball-joint off the tie-rod end.Cut the securing bands on the existing rubber boots, and cut them off completely. Then slide the new boots over the tie-rod and up to the steering box, and secure with the clamp band provided. Depending on your model you may be required to inject some oil into the rubber boots first. Then replace the ball joints the same number of turns, tighten the securing nuts and replace the split pin shown in the video. Get a wheel alignment (essential).

I have a newtonian telescope 76mm with SR4, H12.5 and H20. I have aligned the crosses up and can see through the viewfinder but nothing through the eye piece. Ive placed all the other lenses into the eye piece but nothing - just grey. in the daytime - just whiteness, at night just black, What am I doing wrong ? All the caps are off! Im a tad worried ive bought a low range telescope thats not much good. How is it that I can see through the little viewfinder on top but nothing with the eye piece - even by using the rack and pinion to focus ?

YOU MUST align the small finder scope with the main tube.Point the scope at a distant object like the top of a telephone pole. GET the top in the center of the eyepiece in the main scope. Then without moving the scope-- adjust the cross-hairs in the small finder scope so they line up on the same object.

You may need to buy a generic focuser, if you cannot get a replacement from Meade service; www.meade.com
