Cannot power up my Meade LX200

I have a Meade LX200 8". I bought it around 13 years ago. At the moment, it will not turn on. I pulled off the panel and checked fuse which is good. I measured for power all over the panel and it was there, but it acts like thereis nothing. Even the 3V battery is new. Any ideas?

Cannot power up my Meade LX200

Check to make sure there are no bad connections under the swith itself. My Celestron C8 mount has similar problems and if I mess with the switch it will power up.

Meade LX200 drive system keeps spinning

The older Lx200's go into tracking mode when turned on if they are not recieving a signal from the handbox. It does this on purpose so you can use the telescope without the handbox and still track sky objects. If it is still doing this with the handbox plugged in then you have a bad chip in the electronics and Meade is notorious for not having parts for their older telescopes. Don't send it in to them to repair. It will cost you a fortune to mail back and forth and they still can't repair most electronic problems with their older scopes(from my personal experience).

I have an older Meade LX200 GPS with autostar II handset. The telescope was working fine and last night I got an error message on the handset "Error: Inv. Heap" and the telescope locks up with no further handset or RS232 communications working. I powered the telescope down. When the telescope powered back on, I got the welcome to Autostar message and the firmware version 4.2g. It then changes to a message "Reorganizing" and then generates the Error: Inv. Heap". Meade says to "Reset" but the system locksup before getting to that point in the bootup. Any input on how to resolve this problem?

You may have Corrupted firmware in the hand controller- that's why they want you to do a RESET.You might have to reload the correct firmware to fix this problem.I believe if you hold down the ENTER KEY and the SCROLL DOWN arrow key and then turn on the scope you enter SAFE LOAD where you can reload the firmware.

Problems with my LX200 Classic version

C1 and C2 are on the input of a voltage regulator. The fact that they burn, could mean that their voltage rating has been exceeded (check the voltage across them), or that age has caused their failure. The classic uses about 18 volts into the power panel - see that it is not higher than that. The handpad would not be a cause for this to happen as it is not the source of the power. Replace the caps with similar ones, but with higher voltage rating - 50v is fine. But check your power supply first!

Is the control panel red light ON? If not you have a power circuit board problem. Meade will want the scope returned for repairs.

Cannot focus a Meade Refractor "Electronic Digital" series

All of Meade's manuals are listed here-- it outside during the day time-- put the eyepiece with the LARGEST number written on it into the telescope--- this is the LOWEST magnification.Point it at a distant object and practice focusing-- the moon should be your first night time object.

I have six Meade ETS-LX 6" telescopes which are used in an introductory astronomy lab. I have upgraded the firmware and other files in three of the six and they are working fine. The other three do not function properly. When the powerswitch is turned on, the light in the switch blinks several times and then comes on steady. The AutoStar III handbook shows nothing. I tried the Safe-Loader method given in the advice in several places (including this site) to restore the functioning (hold Enter and Scroll down keys and then turn on), but that does not work (I think it only applies to #495 or #497 Autostars). The safe load procedure for the Autostar II also (999) does not work. According to the Meade assistance person I spoke with, there is no safeload procedure for the Autostar III. The handboxes are not the problem, they work fine on the three telescopes that I did get working. None of the working telescopes give the blinking on the power switch common to all three that do not work. I have tried turning the telescopes on using battery power only, and with the Meade approved 12 V power converter: same sympton with both. Meade's advice is to mail the telescopes to them. If it was only one that failed in this manner I'd probably take that advice, but with three failing the same way, I thought I try to get some help. All are out of warranty, of course. Any ideas?

These scopes have many bugs in the firmware and are not a mature technology. Some people have issues and some do not.About the only thing you can try is to reload the firmware using the SC CARD method. Contact Meade or read the manual to learn how to upgrade the firmware using an SD flash memory card.Other than that the scopes will need to be returned to Meade for repair.

I just bought a meade telescope from a thrift store. I cannot find the model number on it. It seems to work fine, but it is missing the power cord. It may be too old to get a replacement, but I won't know that until I find out what the model number is. All I see is the name Meade in several places. Any secret place to look for the model number?

Telescopes do not have serial numbers-- except for a few custom made scopes. Most actually have names and numbers like LX90, LX200, RCX, ETX90, and so forth. This is probably a small refractor, or reflector style Meade scope. Look under the refractor header or the 4.5 inch reflector header at the manuals and see if you can match up a manual to your scope:Here:
