With the power off, check the connectors are properly plugged in at both ends. Like a network cable, the clip bit should spring out when properly located. Then power on. Within a couple of seconds there should be a long bleep and the display will show a startup message ( A U T O S T A R and Version number). If that doesn't happen, and the batteries are fresh (and inserted the right way round), try connecting the curly cable the other way round (apparently that sometimes fixes it - personally I reckon it may just give another chance to plug it in correctly). If the doesn't work, you may have a faulty cable or a faulty Autostar or a faulty control panel. Take it back to the reseller to sort it out!

I have six Meade ETS-LX 6" telescopes which are used in an introductory astronomy lab. I have upgraded the firmware and other files in three of the six and they are working fine. The other three do not function properly. When the powerswitch is turned on, the light in the switch blinks several times and then comes on steady. The AutoStar III handbook shows nothing. I tried the Safe-Loader method given in the advice in several places (including this site) to restore the functioning (hold Enter and Scroll down keys and then turn on), but that does not work (I think it only applies to #495 or #497 Autostars). The safe load procedure for the Autostar II also (999) does not work. According to the Meade assistance person I spoke with, there is no safeload procedure for the Autostar III. The handboxes are not the problem, they work fine on the three telescopes that I did get working. None of the working telescopes give the blinking on the power switch common to all three that do not work. I have tried turning the telescopes on using battery power only, and with the Meade approved 12 V power converter: same sympton with both. Meade's advice is to mail the telescopes to them. If it was only one that failed in this manner I'd probably take that advice, but with three failing the same way, I thought I try to get some help. All are out of warranty, of course. Any ideas?

These scopes have many bugs in the firmware and are not a mature technology. Some people have issues and some do not.About the only thing you can try is to reload the firmware using the SC CARD method. Contact Meade or read the manual to learn how to upgrade the firmware using an SD flash memory card.Other than that the scopes will need to be returned to Meade for repair.

LX200 GPS problem

I would suspect the Autostar II controller - the symptom seems like a 'stuck' key that tells the telescope to slew in one direction. The controller can be opened with no problems - just be sure not to lose and parts by doing it inside. The keys are molded rubber that press to the curcuit board to make contact. Clean carefully with a dry lint-free cloth and re-assemble. Note: the red filter on the top end falls out when the case is opened, so make sure it is in place when closing. When testing, make sure the axis clamps are loose so the gears can free-wheel without causing damage. Also - do not leave batteries in the telescope in not being used - the last thing you need is a leak.

Rear mirror I have a telescope which I believe the internal mirror in the base may have been adjusted. Is there a way to test or reset to original, or am i just wasting time. The manual states never to adjust this but try telling my son. I have tried to locate something on this on the net but cannot locate any help. Yours help would be much appreciated

I may be telling you something you already know, but just in case. If your telescope is a newtonian/dobsonian (i.e., long, large tube) then the mirror in the bottom can be adjusted to collimate or align properly. On the other hand, if the top of the telescope has glass over it (refractor telescope) then putting it back into place will be more labor intensive and I wouldnt even try it. Try going to the manufacturers website and asking them. You might post the same question on a telescope forum called cloudynights.com. If you live in a large city, try searching for local astronomy clubs as every astronomy club has some guy there who takes these things apart for no reason just to put them back together.

I have a Meade ETX 60 / 70 AT. When I moved to Louisville a few years ago. The telescope would no longer initiate and could not find my location. I put the telescope away and did nothing with it. It is a great piece of equipment and I would like to get going again. I called Meade customer service and they said to buy a new one. My question is - anybody who could evaluate the telescope? Any contacts, clubs, etc? Any help would be appreciated. Bill

Most repairs will be MORE than the telescope is worth. You can buy these used (and working) on AstroMart.com from time to time for under $200.Meade will repair this for about $175. So it makes no sense. The only thing I would try is a new hand controller cable. If it still does not work then you may be able to seell it for parts on astromart.com
