Problems with my LX200 Classic version

Hi, I have a serious problem with my telescope Meade LX200 Classic. I would ask you some opinion about my problem. Today, when I turn on my LX200 the C1 and maybe C2 capacitors are burning. I don't really know the reason why. I hope that the problem is only on C1 and C2 capacitors, but I'm not sure. Looking at the Power Panel schematic on it seems that the C1 and C2 capacitors are supplied from a +12V that arrives from the Keypad. It is possible that the real problem is the Keypad? Sorry for my english. I hope that yuo can help me.

Problems with my LX200 Classic version

C1 and C2 are on the input of a voltage regulator. The fact that they burn, could mean that their voltage rating has been exceeded (check the voltage across them), or that age has caused their failure. The classic uses about 18 volts into the power panel - see that it is not higher than that. The handpad would not be a cause for this to happen as it is not the source of the power. Replace the caps with similar ones, but with higher voltage rating - 50v is fine. But check your power supply first!

Problem with lx200gps meade telescope

It might be a voltage or electrical current problem. Make sure your DC power supply is between 12 and 14 volts. Make sure all electrical connections are tight. Where the power cord plugs into the connection panel, make sure the center pin on the panel fits tightly into the plug. It is a Radio Shack type "N" plug. If tou still have a problem, remove the bottom plate from the scope base and make sure all the connectors are properly seated on the circuit board. Check the connector on the end where the black and red wires are. That is a main power connector and if it is too loose it will not conduct enough current. There can be enough voltage drop that the drive motors won't operate, or they will and the scope will slew uncontrollaby. Be careful handling the wires so that you don't damage them. Good luck, Dave

I have an older Meade LX200 GPS with autostar II handset. The telescope was working fine and last night I got an error message on the handset "Error: Inv. Heap" and the telescope locks up with no further handset or RS232 communications working. I powered the telescope down. When the telescope powered back on, I got the welcome to Autostar message and the firmware version 4.2g. It then changes to a message "Reorganizing" and then generates the Error: Inv. Heap". Meade says to "Reset" but the system locksup before getting to that point in the bootup. Any input on how to resolve this problem?

You may have Corrupted firmware in the hand controller- that's why they want you to do a RESET.You might have to reload the correct firmware to fix this problem.I believe if you hold down the ENTER KEY and the SCROLL DOWN arrow key and then turn on the scope you enter SAFE LOAD where you can reload the firmware.

Capacitor upgrade for classic lx200

I don't know why these are burning out but if you stayed with the same type of capacitor with an increased voltage rating it will most likely help.

Problem with start up on telescope

Most probably, flat batteries. Autostars go berserk when batteries are even a little low. Try it with a mains power adaptor instead. Otherwise, maybe its a dodgy curly cable, broken Autostar, broken control panel or Autostar firmware needs reloaded

Calibrating & Aligning the Meade 10" LX200 GPS Telescope in the Southern Hemisphere

Do a Calibrate Sensors Do a Train Drive in RA and also DECThis makes sure that the scope is calibrated properly. Do an AUTOMATIC ALIGN when asked to center star, look for the BRIGHTEST star that is close to the scopes field of view. It will be that star you need to used the arrow keys on to centre it in the scope eyepiece and press enter. This star can be as much as a HANDS distance away from the centre of view If you cannot identify the star it is asking you to use, press the SCROLL DOWN key to choose another star, keep doing this until you see a star you recognise. That's it!You can also hold down the MODE key for about 4 seconds and scroll through the scope info. Make sure you have the correct location coordinates ( Lat/Long) and the correct time set.Select a bright object first such as a planet and GOTO it. Once you have manually centered it in the eyepiece, press ENTER and hold it for 6 seconds, the handset will say " Press ENTER to sync", press enter and you have updated the scope with the coordinates of that object.

Power problem on lx200gps telescope

If it's an electronic problem --- there are several folks on the Yahoo LX200 Group that can repair the board-- go there and ask for "RON"---You should be using a stable 12 volt power source. The only other thing to check areGet a temporary replacement for the hand controller and see if that works-- and-or get a low cost replacement hand controller cable from and try the old controller with a new cable --- usually one of the capacitors is fried.
