Does my telescope needs acounter weight to keep it still even when the motor is off?

My north star goto scope is ok but the main problem with it is as follows: when i focus on lets say the moon with no help with the finder scope(red-dot) it came with. the scope ALWAYS moves up ward by it's self. the motor is off and when the power is on it does the same. i was told to get a counter weight for it because the mirror (it's at the bottem of the tube) weights so much and tends to make it move upwards. is thier a way to tighten any screws or bolts to stop this problem. p.s the finder scope is not usful at all.

Hi Joe, My name is also Joe and I just bought a Celestron AstroMaster 114 and need a hand with the elevation, inclination, declination settings(what should my gauges be set to) to star using the unit. Any help will be much appreciated. P.D. I only have the telescope with the tri pod and the two lenses that came with it a 10mm and a 20mm lenses. I have ordered the motor drive and a kit of lenses, but the motor drive won't arrive until 9/29/11.

Your DEC is the same as your Latitude-- Right Ascension does not matter for now. Polar Align the scope on the star Polaris-- read this: you are polar aligned, rotate the tube to a star in the sky that you KNOW the name of. Look up the Right Ascension of that star on a cell phone app or a laptop planetarium program like this one:www.stellarium.orgRotate the RA setting circle so it matches what the phone or laptop indicate. LOCK down the RA circle. Your scope is now adjusted to the sky and you can use the numbers on the DEC and RA to find other objects of known RA &

The 360 rotation motor runs (Motor can be heard rinning) But the scope wont rotate. As the product is out of waranty, is it a problem that I could fix my self, as i'm pretty handy with a screw driver & able to fix most things. But with this scope I seem to need blue prints & advice on how to dismantle the scope, as there doe'snt seem to be any visable way to dismantle the thing.

You can send this into Meade for repairs. you can disassemble the base and look inside. I suspect you have either a loose or broken worm gear inside the base. There are manuals available on the Meade web site but they do not give any disassembly instructions. Call Meade at the phone number above or try taking apart the base and look inside. Only Meade will have replacement parts.

I have a broken elevation spindle, the little aluminum casting that passes through the plastic driven gear and ultimately ends in 4 tapped holes that the sleeve bolts to that holds the optical tube. We tried to repair this with JB Weld Epoxy, and it held for one night, but it broke again when moving the scope. Is a replacement spindle casting available from any source? Although I am an engineer, and if money were no object, I could probably reverse engineer this part, produce a blueprint from many careful measurements, go to a foundry, and have a new one cast (or drop forged) in stainless steel, it would cost many times more than the telescope itself, and for that price I could just get a much bigger scope with a far more rugged mount. The original damage happened when the motorized mount was in a duffel bag that someone knocked off the tailgate of a pickup. It fell about 3 feet and impacted on hard rocky terrain. Visually it appeared to be undamaged until the weight of the tube was applied, then it was obvious something had broken. I have some pictures of the part and exactly where it goes if it has a different name than what I described. So i need a good part number for this part, a valid address and price and delivery information to order one from. If someone has built an aftermarket one from something like stainless steel or similar stronger material, so much the better, as it might also stiffen the scope and reduce vibration and oscillation when one bumps the eyepiece while observing.

Meade "MAY" sell you the part? Usually they want you to send the scope back. Call customer service: is also a problem on the ETX model scopes. There are some ingenious fixes posted on the Mighty ETX web site. Here: Bassically bolts, washers and nuts.Search the web site for Broken DEC knob.

I need replacement parts for my telescope I recently bought through a flea market...can I get them? The parts are a 5x24 view finder and the eyepiece lenses that go with it. I have 1 of the 3 originals. Can you help? Also any software or documents to show me how to use it would be helpful. Thank you

You can buy eyepieces from MANY on-line retailers. Here is one: can also buy a finder scope from the above retailer or from this retailer: good retailers on the internet.
