Lens out of alignment

The lens seems to be out of alignment. I can focus the lens' with each eye but viewing together results in the one lens "dropping" slightly. Especially noticable when looking at a straight line object.They retails for about $90 online - is it worth sending in for repair or just buying a new pair ?Thanks ... Meschi

I assume you are referring to collimation of the optical elements. As a general rule lens only systems are pretty resistant to falling out of collimation.

During the day, point the telescope at a part of the landscape about 100 yards away. Use the lowest power eyepiece (highest number) in the focal tube. Center the landscape object in the telescope. Align the finder scope so that it points exactly where the main telescope is. At night, leave the scope out to reach thermal equilibrium (about an hour). Point the finder at the moon. The moon should be in the main scope also. Practice finding the moon before you start on the planets Once you are comfortable with the moon and planets, you can go for the deep sky objects

I see a double image through my Nikon Travelite 12x24s


Hello ScottWhile I am mostly a camera expert , I have seen the problem that you are describing. Inside the camera there is a little reflector which is used to invert the picture and focus it to the viewing eyes. These reflectors are stuck to the camera casing using epoxy and the problem is that with time the epoxy becomes brittle and cracks. When it is cracked , the lens will move out of it's fixed posistion but the epoxy does not always break loose fully which is why you do not hear any rattle.You could attempt to open it up and glue the lens back into posistion using some new epoxy , but you could possibly have some problems with the screws of they are not standard.In this case ask a jeweler to repiar the binocular for you as this should not cost much to repiar...no more than $15.Kind RegardsAndrea

Put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the focuser, do not use the 2x barlow. TRY AGAIN-- during the day time and practice focusing on a distant object.The end with the FOCUSER is the UP end of the tube-- the mirror is on the bottom of the tube. Many beginners mount these BACKWARDS.

I was given a barska 40070 i was assembling it then i came across the barlow lens i tried putting it on my telescope i did but then i went outside i had aligned everything prior to it I looke into the telescope and i could not see anything . how do i fix it or did i do anything wrong with the alignment?


A barlow doubles the magnification of the eyepiece and halves the field of view so it it very hard to center an object. Use the lowest power eyepiece (highest number) first. Center the object in the eyepiece, then you can insert the barlow between the scope and the eyepiece. You will be surprised how far off from center you are.

I bought one of these for my nine year old grand-daughter and we have the same problem (can see nothing) after I made certain that the lens cover was off. It seems that there is a mount with three screws holding the forward mirror in place. This appears as though it may not be aligned with the eyepiece tube. Could this be the problem? If so, can this be adjusted, or have you any other suggestions?


New telescope users are taken by surprise at the difficulty of just pointing the telescope in the right direction to see anything. The field of view is quite limited, especially if you are using a high power eyepiece. The higher the power of eyepiece on a telescope, the dimmer the image, the more difficult to aim it at any chosen object, and the more difficult to focus. When the scope is not focussed, even if there are stars in the field of view, they will only be faint blurs.It is best when you are starting out with a telescope to try it with the least powerful eyepiece (the one with the highest number) to begin with, until you become more familiar with how it works. Do NOT use the Barlow lens if one came with the scope.I'm not sure what you mean by the "forward mirror". If this is a reflector telescope there is a diagonal mirror inside the main tube near the front opening, which directs the light reflected and focused by the main mirror out to the side through the eyepiece. If that is what you are talking about, then yes, it can get out of alignment and yes, it can be adjusted, but NOT by someone who does not know exactly what they are doing. I very much doubt that this is the problem. These scopes are meant to be in alignment as shipped, and mostly they stay that way.Your description of the "forward mirror" could be the finder scope fitted to most telescopes.This is meant to help you get the main scope lined up on the object you want to view, and you do have to adjust it adjust it to precisely line up with the main scope. Telescope manuals recommend that you do this in daylight, by pointing the main scope at an object on the horizon and adjusting the finder to match (never point a telescope toward the Sun!). Once you have a tree or mountain peak in the center of the main scope's image, you can then adjust the screws around the finder scope to get the crosshairs (or red dot) centered on the same object. It is very difficult to do this job in the dark, especially as objects in the sky are constantly on the move. You will find that there is a very wide range of movement in the focus mechanism, because different eyepieces focus at different points, but the actual focus range for any eyepiece will be a small part of the overall range afforded by the focusing mount. It is much easier to familiarise yourself with this in daylight.At this point you will learn that astronomical telescopes usually show an upside down image. There is a good reason for this- erecting the image needs more bits of glass in the light path, which reduces the amount of light and increases aberrations. Even if this is only slight, astronomers prefer to avoid it, and they don't really care which way up the Moon or Jupiter appear.Once you have done the above, you can try the scope at night, on an easy to find bright object like the Moon. Looking at random stars will probably be disappointing, as they don't look different under magnification. You will have to find planets, star clusters or nebula to see anything interesting. You will also find the the object you are looking at swims out of the viewing field, and you must continually move the scope to follow it. This will be more pronounced at higher magnifications. Again, use the least powerful eyepiece. Small scopes are often advertised as having unrealistic powers (300, 500) which can never be practically achieved.
