Hi there, I have also recently bought a Nexstar but mine is a 4SE. Im still pretty new at it myself but from what I understand, the Nexgps software is just the computer software to control the GPS unit from your PC - the same as the NexRemote software. If you dont have a GPS unit you have to purchase it as an extra so the software will only be useful if you have GPS. The Nextour is just software that allows you to add objects you wish to see that the telescope will take you too in tour mode. Once you have it aligned of course. I see this post was almost a year ago so you probably know all this by now. Do you have any problems using the star align? Im really battling - gonna try 2 start align because it doesnt quite know where it is when I do the 3 star align. Regards, Bianca [email protected]

I have e newer nexstar scope and the software that came with it is for windows 2000. My computer is windows vista. Is there an update so the software will run on vista? Please tell me there is. I would love to use my laptop to run the scope.

Celestron downloads are available here, and you can contact their tech support from there as well.

Start Align with NexStar 4SE

Did you enter the correct TIME, DATE, and LOCATION? and yes you may have aligned on to the wrong stars -- they need to be "near" the center.

I am new to astronomey and I just purchased a used TASCO Starguide 60 telescope at a garage sale. I did not receive an owners/''how to'' manual; but I did get info from this site that directed me to a similar Nexstar telescope; my problem is I do not have a clue as to how to use this scope. The Nexstar 60, while similar, has many differences. I believe that I need to upgrade items(i.e. the hand control) to those like the Nexstar. Do the nexstar hand controls work with the TASCO? If so, is it worth it to do so? Believe me I need a LOT of help!!!

Locate a local astronomy club and attend their star parties. They will help you with the telescope. NO! Nexstar hand controller do not work on TASCO telescopes. You bought a VERY VERY small 60mm telescope. You would have been better off buying 10x50mm binoculars as your first "telescope".

Computer control and pointing with NorthStar Goto & Autostar

Your reseller is correct. The wire (Meade cable #505) goes from an RS232 serial port on PC to a 4pin RJ plug. This plugs into the 2nd socket on the bottom of an Autostar 497 handset, the other socket being used for the curly lead to the telescope. So it goes PC to Autostar to telescope. A common error is to try plugging the serial wire into an "AUX" ort on the telescope control panel - same connector. Not only does this not work, it can cause a lot of damage. Wired like this you can control the scope from Meade's Autostar Suite (or many other planetarium softwares). You can also update the Autostar software to the latest 2009 version. What else can go wrong? Well, many people want to control from a laptop, and modern ones don't have RS232 serial ports. Then you need a USB-to-serial convertor dongle, which effectively add a serial port to a laptop. But they often give it a very high port number (eg COM17) that the planetarium software does not find. Use Control Panel to reset the USB-serial-port to COM 1, 2, 3 or 4 and all should be well. But it can be a right fiddle!

I have the Nexstar 8. It will not auto align or manual....

You must set TIME, DATE, and SITE-- probably does not know your actual location. Read the manual and perform all of the setup procedures. Some of these have a "starting position" again read the manual and make sure you are in the "home" position before you start the alignment. Read my TIP on my profile page about GOTO telescopes, and join the NEXSTAR forum on www.cloudynights.com

RCX 400 Serial port connection failure

If you are sure it is not the cable--- and the serial port NUMBER is correct-- then time to send it back to Meade for repairs. ARE YOU SURE that you have set the SOFTWARE to the proper port number?

I can not get my Telescope to focus so a picture appears!

You should read the manual - available in the customer service section at meade.com. This is s 'D'eep 'S'pace 'I'mager, so it is geared for faint objects using long exposures (30 seconds and longer). Focus by locating a bright star in the camera, and adjust the telescope focus control for smallest star image. Then move to object wanted to photograph, and begin the long exposures.

The azimuth adjustment keys don't work

Send it back along with the hand controller describing the problem. Could be several things including a bad hand controller. If there is a local astronomy shop nearby take the scope there and ask to try one of the hand controllers in the shop and test it. If it now works you just need to buy another hand controller.Otherwise send it in for repair
